Sorde l'Abbaye "Petite Cité de Caractère®"

Visiting the abbey also means discovering a village that is closely linked to this monumental heritage, as its name suggests: Sorde-l'Abbaye! The village joined “Petites Cités de Caractère®” network in December 2025. This distinction highlights an atypical municipality, which is both rural in terms of its location and limited population, and urban in terms of its history and heritage.

The village of Sorde-l’Abbaye "Petite Cité de Caractère®"

An authentic heritage, nestled between the hillside and the Gave d'Oloron river

This ancient bastide town, built around the abbey, has preserved its authentic heritage, nestled between the hillside and the Gave d'Oloron river. The traditional houses, with their large basket-handle carriage doors, offer a beautiful architectural harmony. Remains of walls recall the thick ramparts that surrounded the abbey town.
The imposing presence of the abbey church cannot escape the visitor entering the village. The municipality has undertaken a major restoration programme for this listed monument, as well as development work in the centre of the village: these operations are necessary to preserve the abbey complex and revitalise the living environment of this small town.
The vitality of the place is expressed in the activities on offer, including walking and water sports, but also in the rich network of associations that bring the village to life all year round: Basque pelota tournaments, pétanque games, dance and Gascon language classes, hikes, local festivals, gourmet and festive evenings, etc
After visiting the abbey, take the time to stroll through the village streets and side roads that will lead you to the fountain-wash house, the old hospital that welcomed travellers, the hillside with its breathtaking view of the village and the Pyrenees in the distance, and of course the unmissable banks of the Gave d'Oloron river!

"Petites Cités de Caractère®" association in a nutshell

“Petites Cités de Caractère®” association was founded in Brittany in 1975 with the aim of promoting and enhancing the value of small picturesque towns: located in exceptional natural sites, they were once religious, political, military or commercial centres. Following France's administrative and industrial revolutions, they saw their urban functions decline.

At the crossroads of economic revitalisation, community living and cultural activities, the association aims to preserve and promote the heritage of these towns, turning it into a real lever for regional development. To this end, it relies on the Quality Charter, the cornerstone of the concept, which commits municipalities to pursuing an active policy of safeguarding, maintaining and restoring their urban heritage, as well as promoting and animating it among residents and visitors.

264 remarkable municipalities have joined this network.

Labastide-d'Armagnac and Sorde-l'Abbaye are the two “Petites Cités de Caractère®” located in the Landes department.
