Since 2002, the local community of Pays d’Orthe et Arrigans municipalities has been restoring the monastery buildings of Sorde Abbey, which had severely deteriorated over the centuries due to wars, looting and the ravages of time.

With financial support from the French government, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Landes Department and benefactors, major work has been carried out to strengthen the buildings and allow the public to visit the site.

The work has made it possible to restore the locutory, the prior’s quarters, the chapter house, the dining hall and the tithe barn.

As it is gradually restored, the abbey is regaining its past splendour.
